Kewell equals Rufer record as 3 time OFC player of the year
Harry Kewell has been named the 2003 player of the year by OFC officials yesterday, winning by a staggering margin.
Kewell, a now three time OFC player of the year, lead former Leeds and current Socceroos striking partner Mark Viduka and New Zealand defender Ryan Nelson to take out the title. Kewell finished on 76 votes overshadowing proceedings from Viduka, 29 votes, and Nelson, 22 votes.
The selection means Kewell equals OFC player of the century, Wynton Rufer's three crowns. Kewell expressed pride in equaling the New Zealander's record but added, "I will also try my best to break it and hope to produce enough good football to keep them voting for me. (www.fifa.com)
Despite numerous sources stating the uncertainty around Kewell's selection in Australia's squad to travel to Venezuela this week, it has been confirmed Kewell will play. A suspension from Liverpool providing the door for Kewell to travel to the South American nation without the hinderance of backing up the following weekend.
Frank Farina, Australian coach and inaugural OFC player of the year (1988), was delighted with the Kewell being named player of the year.
He deserves the win and is arguably the best player we've ever produced ..... He could go on to win a lot more. Farina said (www.fifa.com)
