Spain hit back, US extend lead - Gr. C wrap
Russia proved no match for the US squad overnight as the North Americans ran out 4-1 winners. Spain meanwhile pipped Korea Republic 2-1 after being spanked 1-4 by Russia in their first match.
The United States team were far superior to the Russians and within the first two minutes they took the lead. Angie Woznuk converted from the penalty spot after Jessica Rostedt was felled by Russian captain Semenchenko. Woznuk then became provider for Rostedt as she put an inch perfect ball through which was finished easily after rounding the keeper (25 min).
Sochneva brought the Russians back into the match when she brought a head high ball down, turned and scored just after the break (46 min). However the US were quick to reply and scored from a quick free kick. Alexa Orand instigasted a quick ball to Amy Rodríguez who cut a pass back to Rostedt. From close range she scored her second (60 min). The three points secured when Rapinoe secured the tap in after Woznuk provided her second for the match.
Spain also picked up full honours after a horendous result against Russia first up. Jade got the ball rolling when she headed home on 19 minutes for Spain. The Asian champions piled on the preassure but nothing resulted. Unfortunatly for Korea, Spain would extend its lead on 57 minutes when Jade ran 40 metres to score her second goal of the match.
Park Eun Sun would pull one back however after the referee blew for a free to Korea. A stinging 30 yard bulged the top-left corner of the net to provide the Korean fans some hope. With a second wind Korea came full pelt at Spain however couldn't find that elusive equiliser in the final 18 minutes. Spain holding on for a 2-1 victory.
With 2 from 2 wins the United States has secured a place in the next phase. Russia, Spain (both on 3 points) and Korea Republic however are all in contention for a place with Korea, despite having lost both matches, still able to make second place. This however would take at least a three goal victory over the Russians though and a loss to Spain.
