Dave's World Cup

Paraguay Vs. Brazil highlight of round 5

The fifth round of South American qualifiers will be played this week with the pick of the matches being Paraguay hosting world champions Brazil.

Paraguay currently lead the standings with nine points from four matches, one point ahead of Brazil who are third on goal difference. The result could determine top spot with a win for either side securing at least tieing the spot on points.

Argentina would be wanting to take advantage of the possibility to skip ahead of at least one of the two teams mentioned when they take on seventh places Ecuador. Argentina, second ahread of Brazil, will move clear ahead of the loser of the 1st Vs 3rd place match should they defeat the 2002 world cup debutants on Argentinian soil.

Another interesting clash is the fourth Vs. fifth placed match between Uruguay and Venezuela in Montevideo. Uruguay have scored the most goals of all ten nations (11 goals) while Venezuela are struggling to score with only three goals thus far. Their 1-1 draw against Australia last month saw their only goal come in second half injury time, indicating the difficulty they have to score.

Bolivia host Chile in what is almost a bottom of the table clash. 8th vs. 9th, Chile only ahead of Bolivia by a point. After drawing against Argentina in the first round Chile have struggled and may find the altitude a problem in La Paz.

Finally Peru host struggling Colombia. For Peru, it's a chance to get into the top five which is all so important in this region while Colombia may see riots if they don't pick themselves up off the bottom of the table. Colombia have earnt a single point in four matches and have the worst scoring rate of any CONMEBOL team (0.5 goals per match).
