Dave's World Cup

Dave's World Cup

2014 WC should be in South America says Argentina

Julio Grondona, president of the Argentine Football Federation, announced that the region of South America should be the continent to host the 2014 world cup.

However despite the ambitious call Grondona doesn't believe Argentina would be the one to hold the event, saying brazil would be the best choice.

"I don't think Argentina will be nominated. Brazil have not staged the event since 1950 and we organised it in 1978." Grondona told a local radio station. However he did add that should Brazil not organise the tornament Argentina would do so probably in partnership with Chile or Uruguay.

CONMEBOL officials have lobbied hard for the issue to be raised at the recent FIFA congress but Sepp Blatter didn't raise the issue. He has however raised the issue of rotation and it's based on this that CONMEBOL officials are desperate to host the event. With UEFA staging the next world cup and CAF (Africa) promised 2010 and AFC (Asia) staging the most recent world cup, it leaves both the American confederations and Oceania to nominate. With the USA hosting the event in 1994 and soccer in Oceania only just receiving a full place in the tornament chances are the world cup will be held in South America in 2014.

However these decisions won't be discussed by FIFA for a while with a decision on the continent coming as far away as early 2004.
