Dave's World Cup

Mexico names preliminary squad

Mexican coach Ricardo Lavolpe has named a 26 man preliminary squad for the lead-up to the World Cup.

With only a 23 man squad allowed to be named, Lavolpe must reduce the squad to twenty-three by the May 15 deadline.

Only four foreign based players have made the preliminary squad. Bolton striker and top goal scorer in the World Cup qualifiers Jared Borgetti, Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, veteran Chivas USA defender Claudio Suarez and Villarreal forward, and naturalised Argentine, Guillermo Franco.

Mexico have a busy friendly schedule in the lead up to the world cup. Having already beaten Ghana (1-0) and Paraguay (2-1) since the start of March, May provides four away matches. El Salvador will host Mexico in their only match before the May 15 deadline (May 3rd) while matches against Saudi Arabia (May 20), France (May 27) and Holland (June 1) complete their run into the finals in Germany.

Mexico will play Iran (June 11), Angola (June 16) and Portugal (June 21) in Group D.
