North American big names struggle.
CONCACAF heavyweights were given a bit of a shock in the first round of matches in the semi-final group stage last Wednesday as they attempt to qualify for the world cup in Germany 2006.
The USA, Costa Rica and Canada, all favourites to progress into the next stage, all failed to take three points in their openers to the likes of Jamaica, Honduras and Guatemala respectively.
The biggest upset though was the Honduras 5-2 victory over 2002 world cup finalists Costa Rica. A double by Andy Herron (20' and 36') couldn't help as the Honduras spread the load around. David Suazo (22'), Julio Leon (35'), Amando Guevara (77'), Ivan Guerrero (87') and Saul Martinez (89') put their names in lights as the island nation, who had only ever been to one world cup before, destroyed the big names and went top of the table.
Sticking with Group 2 Guatemala pulled off what could be considered more of a minor upset, overcoming Canada 2-0 in Vancouver. Carlos Ruiz started the scoring early to put the northern nation on the backfoot early, scoring in the seventh minute. He finished the job with a goal 14 minutes after half time, leaving the Canadians with nowhere to go. The Costa Rican loss however means Canada is still third on goal difference. However the standings after one round of this group would have the local bookies paying out the big money for anyone who predicted it.
A similar upset was on the cards in group 1 when Jamaica took an early second half lead through Ian Goodison. On 49 minutes he put the homeside into the lead and the prospect of having their first ever victory against the USA was in reach. However, always one to spoil a party, the US equilised on 88 minutes through Brian Ching. The result is still credible for Jamaica although they would be a little disappointed to let the game slip away. The USA however would be dirty at themselves for playing below their normal standard and allowing the Jamaicans such a chance.
In what could have been considered group one's battle for third and fourth, even at this early stage, El Salvador now find themselves ontop of the table after defeating Panama 2-1. An early Victor Velasquez (7') goal put the El Salvadorians ahead. But Panama fought hard and pulled it back to a level score on 36 minutes when Julio Dely knocked in. However almost always a painful blow, El Salvador scored dead on half time when Jorge Rodriguez scored from a free kick. Even more devestating for Panama was the fact moments before El Salvador's Jose Martinez had been sent off after two cautions. But not even being reduced to ten men could prevent a first up victory.
In the only group 3 match played, Trinidad and Tobago got off to a good start, winning 2-0 over St. Vincent and the Grenadines. However while the scoreline seems comfortable it was anything but. Trinidad/Tobago only managed a first goal on 80 minutes when Errol McFarlane netted. He scored five minutes later to confirm the victory but the home side had made them earn their three points.
St. Kitts and Nevis Vs. Mexico has been rescheduled for November 13th. They will play again in Mexico on the 17th to complete the semi-final stage.
