Mexico take out Gold Cup in extra time

Mexico have secured their fourth CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy after downing invitational CONMEBOL guests Brazil in extra time of the final.

Daniel Osorno's 97th minute strike was enough to send the 80,000 strong crowd into a frenzy at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico. Taking it from the right of the goal and dribbling across, Osorno stuck the ball infront of goal with his left to beat the Brazilian keeper.

After 90 minutes both sides were scoreless and this resulted in the first extra time golden goal final since 1991. It was also the fifth consecutive clean sheet for Mexican keeper Oswaldo Sanchez. A great achievement in itself.

The United States and Costa Rica, the nations playing off for third place, won the two main awards for the tornament. The US won the Fair Play award while both nations members leading the individual goalscorers tally, Landon Donovan (USA) and Walter Centano (Costa Rica) each with 4.

The third place playoff went to the USA who downed Costa Rica 3-2 in a thriller. Fonseca put the Costa Rican side ahead in the 24th minute before Bocanegra leveled 5 minutes later. Fonseca gave the visiting nation the lead before half time once more. Stewart and Convey both scored in the second half for the USA to move ahead and take the third place crown.
