Top three CAF player named. Who will be the player of the year?
Senegal's Papa Bouba Diop, El Hadji Diouf and Egypt's Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’ have been shortlisted for Afica's player of the year.
Diop made history in Korea when he scored the first goal of the world cup as well as the first goal in Senegal's finals history. The goal also led to Senegal beating the former world champions in the first match of the tornament, paving the way for both teams final destiny. Diop has already taken the Senegal player of the year award for 2002.
Diouf became a superstar at the world cup. Senegal's main striker being hyped up by comentators around the world after his performance against France. He ended up being bought by Liverpool from Lens. Diouf claimed the 2001 CAF player of the year title and if he wins it again he'd only be the second player to win in successive years.
'Mido', the nickname given to Hossam, has helped lead Ajax to a domestic double and the Super Cup in the Netherlands. Should 'Mido' win he would be the second Egyptian to win the award. The past winner from Egypt was 20 years ago when Mahmoud Al Khatib won in 1983.
The award will be given on the awards night held in South Africa on March 31. A list of the remaining seven in the top ten are as follows:
