UEFA Qualifying competition

This is where all the battles are fought and won by some of the biggest countries in World cup history. Welcome to UEFA!

The qualifying is as simple as this:

France qualifyed automatically due to winning World Cup '98. This leaves 50 teams. They have been split into 9 groups. 4 groups of 5 and 5 groups of 6. The winners of these groups are automatically into Japan/Korea 2002. The 9 runners-up will be drawn from a pool to create 4 play-off matches for places in the finals competition.

The one remaining team (you thought something was wrong here didn't you!) will play-off against the third placed Asian team.
